Ballito dancer Samantha Southwood (16) came out on top against some of SA’s best dance talent, finishing in the top 4 of the Red Bull Dance Your Style qualifying event.
Held in Durban in June, the dance competition saw Samantha compete against 60 dancers on her way to the world final.
Although she was eliminated in the semi-finals, getting into the top 4 is a feat worth noting.
One of the youngest dancers to compete, Samantha faced fierce competition and had just 30 seconds to wow the crowd, who had the final say on the winner of each round.
The Red Bull Dance Your Style Qualifier brought together the best dance talent from South Africa.
This is a one-on-one street dance battle where dancers dance to unpredictable hits, performing any style of street dance.
Samantha’s competition format was freestyle and although she may not have won the event, her coach and mentor, Verb Bhengu from Durban did.
Verb will continue to battle dancers across the country for the chance to be selected to represent South Africa at the World Finals, which will take place in December.
The national finals will take place in Johannesburg in October.
All hope is not lost though as Samantha may still have a shot at qualifying for Nationals thanks to her video.
Samantha has been dancing since the age of 6 and has participated in several competitions.
In 2019, she placed 2nd for her Hip Hop Solo, and 2nd again for her Hip Hop Duet Routines at the Commonwealth Dance Games.
