Bone-busting street dancer wins Red Bull Dance Your Style

Diddy Mayanda clinched top prize as the Durban champion in the world’s biggest one-on-one street dancing competition in South Africa, Red Bull Dance Your Style.

Mayanda’s distinctive bone-breaking dance infused with Afro pop street dance style captured the hearts of the crowds during the energy-filled regional qualifying tour leg held at Suncoast in Durban.

The city’s best street dancers have turned out in droves to compete for a spot to represent Mzansi at the World Finals, which will take place in December in South Africa. Hosted by Elly the Entertainer, the qualifying tour kicked off with workshops led by Sherwin, Malondy G, King and Diddy Mayanda.

This was followed by the one-on-one qualifying rounds which showcased various styles of movement as the dancers competed for an unpredictable musical selection curated by DJ extraordinaire Tha Cutt.

The ultimate battle saw Diddy Mayanda take on 17-year-old hip-hop dancer Samantha Southwood, who was thrilled to be a part of this experiment.

“I had a lot of fun and happier to have met new dancers, I’m happy to have had the opportunity to show that girls can do any style of dance they want, do it even when you go up against big strong boys,” she said.

Mayanda said, Sam was my biggest challenge. Last year I competed with Sam who knocked me out of the competition but today I came out on top and I’m very happy with that. Shout out to Sam for keeping it going again this year.

The Durban champion will join Johannesburg qualifier winner Sne alongside five other winners from regional tour stops in Bloemfontein, Polokwane, Gqeberha, Cape Town and Pretoria, where these top street dancers will compete for the title National Red Bull Dance Your Style 2022. winner.

When asked what people can expect from him at the national finals, he replied, “I’m going to do my own thing and that’s what I’m good at. People shouldn’t expect me to do the same – I’ll do everything from afro pop, break dance to hip hop. I go dancing for people because that’s what I love to do,” Mayanda said.

There are seven Red Bull Dance Your Style qualifying South African tour dates remaining which will be held at various locations across the country.

The winner of the South African National Final, which takes place on October 22-23, will represent South Africa at the Red Bull Dance Your Style World Final on December 10 in Johannesburg.
