Netflix has released the first trailer for its upcoming series The Witcher: Origin of Blood – The series, which will debut on the streaming service from December 25, will serve as a prequel to its hit show, which itself is on the books of Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski.
The Witcher: Origin of Blood takes place around 1200 years before the arrival of legendary figures such as Ciri, Yennefer and, of course, Geralt of Rivia himself, and will tell the story of the legendary “Conjunction of the Spheres”, the moment when the worlds of man, elf and monster have collided for the first time, ushering in a bold and dangerous new era for man and beast. The series will depict the coming of the event, alongside the necessary founding of a legion of beast-slayers known as the “Witchers”.
The new four-part series will be directed by the legendary Michelle Yeoh (Shang-Chi, everything everywhere at once) as the fearsome Scian sword-elf. Yeoh will be joined by Jodie Turner-Smith (Anne Boelyn, True Blood) as a highly trained officer of Queen Éile’s Guard, and Laurence O’Fuarain (Game of Thrones, Vikings) as a Fjall warrior seeking redemption. The cast is completed by Mirren Mack, Zach Wyatt and Jacob-Collins Levy.
The Witcher: Origin of Blood will offer an original story, set in the same universe as the original games and novels, but telling a story of new characters and events. The show will precede the arrival of The Witcher’s fourth season, which will see Liam Hemsworth take on the dual swords of Geralt of Rivia, donning the well-worn scabbard of outgoing actor Henry Cavill.
The Witcher: Origin of Blood premieres December 25 exclusively on Netflix.
