Chestnuts, Billy Slater Origin selections, Selwyn Cobbo, Jeremiah Nanai

Maroons coach Billy Slater says “age is just a number” when it comes to discussing young stars at the draft table.

Slater has exactly one week until he is due to submit his team ahead of the June 8 opener, and he admits emerging stars Selwyn Cobbo and Jeremiah Nanai are raising their hands to be bolters.

Cobbo, who is just 19, recently had former Queensland manager Paul Vautin call for his Origin selection after a hat-trick against Manly.

While Cobbo has just 18 NRL games to his name, he has been arguably the competition’s best young star in recent weeks, scoring seven tries in Brisbane’s last three games, all of which have been wins.

Meanwhile, 19-year-old running back Nanai has been a try scoring machine for the Cowboys with nine scored in 11 appearances this year.

“With age comes youth and exuberance, and you see that with the Cowboys right now,” Slater told Wide World of Sports. Billy’s breakdown.

“The only thing they don’t have is experience. But you don’t get experience unless you have an opportunity.

Slater said that while the highlights produced by the two young stars are exciting, it’s the effort he appreciates more than anything when it comes to selecting talent.

“The only thing I looked at was consistent action on the pitch,” Slater added.

“Not just the highlights that Selwyn Cobbo and Jeremiah Nanai have produced, it’s the effort actions, the defensive actions, that get the ball out of trouble.

“Doing a lot of things that the team sees, but not necessarily what we focus on on TV.

“They did that, which is really good.

“Age is just a number to me if they do these actions.”
