Rita Marley will celebrate her 76th birthday this year in iconic fashion. To commemorate the occasion, dubbed “One Rita: Royal and Rootsy,” the Marley family has planned a series of events culminating in a concert fit for the queen of reggae.
Marley turns 76 on July 25. Activities surrounding her birthday aim to highlight and support Jamaican communities that are rooted in causes she is passionate about as a cultural legend and philanthropist.
“His philanthropy, his determination, his work ethic and his entrepreneurial spirit are the meaning of the community. That’s where I saw the true meaning of love and heart,” grandson Skip Marley said.
True to form, events scheduled during the month are humanitarian, environmental, wellness-focused and include the launch of the annual Rita Marley Fellowship.
Anniversary activities begin July 9 with the One Rita Beach Cleanup at 8 Miles, Bull Bay. On July 15, The Rita Marley Foundation will host The Reggae Closet, a free shop for communities in downtown Kingston. A Women’s Health and Wellness Day in Jamnesia on July 13 will bring together health service providers in the community. This is followed by a Bonfire Reasoning on the beach by women, for women and about women. Other tributes include a Suite of Songs performance by Jamaica’s National Dance Theater Company to acknowledge its cultural influence as Jamaica celebrates its 60th anniversary of independence.
The culmination of the celebrations is a star-studded concert broadcast live on the American satellite radio company SiriusXM on July 13 at 5:00 p.m. Eastern / 4:00 p.m. Jamaican time on Channel 19 Radio. Bob Marley’s Tuff Gong and the SiriusXM app. Many popular Jamaican artists, including Tarrus Riley, Chaka Demus and Pliers, Carlene Davis, Richie Spice, Gem Myers, Dean Fraser, Shuga and Christopher Ellis, will join forces to celebrate the Marley family matriarch.
The celebration culminates with a live video stream of Rita Marley’s birthday, July 25, on Tuff Gong TV, sharing highlights of the birthday activities as well as the SiriusXM concert with fans around the world.
