Ian Tico wins Red Bull Dance competition – Nairobi News

Ian Tico has been crowned champion of the 2021 Red Bull Dance Your Style Kenya National Championships.

With this win, the University of Nairobi Urban Planning graduate got the opportunity to represent Kenya at the World Finals in South Africa in December 2021.

The electric event which took place at the Alliance Française brought together 16 finalists who fought for the chance to be Kenya’s National Dance Champion.

The competition was launched in October 2020 and brought together over 100 dancers from across the country.

“I am forever grateful to Red Bull who saw fit for Kenya to be part of these World Championships, thank you to my fans and everyone who voted for me, I will make you proud,” said Tico.

Chiki Kuruka, dance choreographer and judge of this competition, said it was a great honor for the dance community in Kenya to be one of 80 countries to participate in this global competition.

“I believe the ultimate winner of the global competition will come from Kenya,” she added.

The Dance Your Style competition relies on a crowd voting system instead of judges to select the most talented dancers. The finals took on a battle format where the one-on-one challenges lasted 45 seconds each.

The battles were tough and many rounds ended in ties, with the final battle taking place minutes before 7pm and in an overwhelming public vote, Tiko was chosen as the champion.

The Red Bull Dance Your Style competition is a battling concept that brings out the different personalities and characters of street dancers through challenges that include a spontaneous change of music during performances.

It features one-on-one battle in all street dance styles including breaking, hip-hop, popping, lock and Bboy dance and other street dance styles.

The event was organized by Red Bull in collaboration with Trace Eastern Africa.
