Is Black Adam evil and what is his origin story in the comics?

Superhero cinema has arguably dominated the blockbuster sphere since 2008, which saw the launch of the MCU starring Jon Favreau. Iron Man and also the likes of Christopher Nolan The black Knight.

Every year we see more and more A-list actors and celebrities leaving their mark on the subgenre and now… it’s Dwayne Johnson’s turn to shine.

The 50-year-old American actor has long established himself as a big box office draw and he plays the titular Teth-Adam in Black Adam.

Directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, it’s based on the DC Comics character of the same name, and trailers have already encouraged people to do some homework before checking it out. A question that emerges is: Is Black Adam evil?

Is Black Adam evil?

Yes, but it’s complex. Black Adam is actually a supervillain turned antihero, not a superhero like DC’s Superman or Batman. Given that, the movie should be a rather different and a little less conventional origin story than most are familiar with.

The character was created by Otto Binder and CC Beck and is best known as the archenemy of Shazam (portrayed in the DCEU by Zachary Levi).

Screenrant reports that the Marvel Family #1 comic opens with Shazam recounting his past, detailing the circumstances that led to Teth-Adam becoming a villain. In Egypt, thousands of years ago, Shazam actually bestowed his powers on him in hopes that he would become a hero like himself.

However, it wasn’t long before the power and ability to corrupt Adam and his mind began to slip, thus beginning his demise. Shazam realized he had made a mistake and decided to act, sparking a rivalry that persisted throughout the comics…

Black Adam Origin Story

Black Adam’s origin story saw Shazam banish him to the farthest star in the universe, leaving him thousands of years away from humanity.

This meant that Adam was forced to travel for many, many years just to get back to Earth; five thousand, to be exact. As you can imagine, he’s had plenty of time to simmer his hatred for Shazam while embarking on the journey.

With each passing year, his heightened desire for revenge simmered.

When he finally arrived at his destination, he wished to take over, though that didn’t eclipse his grudge against Shazam after a violent encounter with the Wizard’s allies.

In a sense, the backstory may lead some to argue that Black Adam as a villain is Shazam’s own creation thanks to such harsh punishment. Having some sympathy is essentially crucial when it comes to rooting for an antihero.

“You need people who break the rules”

Vanity Fair reports that the film’s director drew comparisons between Clint Eastwood’s iconic Dirty Harry character and Black Adam:

“I spoke with DJ very early on about how there were many similar aspects between Black Adam and dirty harry, which is a movie that broke the rules in the 70s. The systems were corrupted, so the criminals took advantage. You needed a cop who would cut the bulls**t off and basically do what needs to be done.

He continued, “It totally fits Black Adam and his way of thinking. I think it appeals to almost everyone. Everyone knows how unfair the world sometimes is, and you need people who break the rules to level the playing field.”

Black Adam opens in theaters on Friday, October 21, 2022.
