John Oliver reveals the origin of the ongoing Adam Driver joke

Last week tonight with John Oliver has made headlines over the years for a number of reasons, from its in-depth reporting on major social issues to the bizarre and often pop culture-specific references the show uses to convey its information. One of the most ubiquitous jokes of recent years Last week tonight was Oliver’s apparent fascination with actor Adam Driver, who used thirsty and often violent descriptors to tell of his infatuation. In a recent interview with ColliderOliver dove into the origins of this joke and revealed that the intention wasn’t initially to make it a recurring format.

“No, it was a one-off joke,” Oliver explained. “It was one of the last shows we had in the studio before the pandemic started. I just liked it because it was a really funny joke. The audience seemed to like it a bit and be very uncomfortable as well. And it was the perfect synthesis of those two reactions. So we did it over and over again and it felt like a really fun joke format. Then we were about to quit because it felt like, unless this joke is heading somewhere towards your point of view, it probably should end.

“That’s when we reached out to Adam Driver and said, ‘Hey, I don’t know if you know we’re doing this joke, if you’d like to come at the end of the year, I’ll carry on and We’ll set it up. Otherwise, we’ll quit,” Oliver continued. “Because we didn’t want to get into this situation, just like you say, where you’re building for gain, and you can’t stick on landing. So once we knew he was coming at the end of the year, at that point, and that’s five jokes, at that point we realized, oh, we’re continuing this at the end of the year then. But you can accelerate with confidence knowing the payoff will be magnificent.

The track eventually resulted in Driver’s appearance in the show’s Season 7 finale, with the star wars and Gucci House actor with a very specific and hilarious role to play in the proceedings. Oliver also thanked Driver by name during the show’s acceptance speech at the 2021 Emmys.

Last week tonight with John Oliver will return with new episodes on Sunday, February 20.
