Marathon County Public Library Operations: May

From May 2 through May 31, adults can pick up a free Grab & Go craft kit at any of nine Marathon County Public Library locations. The kit will contain supplies to make seed bombs for planting annual and perennial wildflowers. Free and available while supplies last. For more information, call 715-261-7230.


The Marathon County Library and Extension will be offering virtual classes in gardening techniques in small spaces on May 4 from 10-11 a.m., with the class repeating that evening from 6-7 p.m. Both courses will be delivered through the Zoom app. Participants can attend the session virtually via webcam or telephone. Browse thousands of items at the upcoming Friends of MCPL Book Sale, taking place May 4-7 at the Wausau Library Headquarters, 300 N. First St., Wausau. Sales hours are May 4, 5-7:30 p.m. (open to Friends of MCPL members only); May 5 from 9:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.; May 6 from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; and May 7 from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Call 715-261-7230 for more information.


Until May 27, young writers aged 9 to 18 are invited to submit original and unpublished poems for the MCPL Youth Poetry Contest. There is no length limit and each person can enter two poems. Entrants must be residents of Marathon County. Submit nominations to [email protected] or drop them off in person at any MCPL location. Winners will receive recognition and prizes. The Hatley branch of the library, 435 Curtis Avenue, Hatley, will offer outdoor family storytime on May 3 from 10:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Children and families can hear library staff reading stories and singing songs about the green space outside the Hatley branch. Family story time is back! Listen to stories read by library staff and sing along to upbeat songs every Wednesday and Thursday morning from 10 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the Wausau Library Headquarters, 300 N. First St., Wausau. Wisconsin teens are invited to this virtual hangout hosted by teen librarians across the state. The hangout/chat will take place on May 12 from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., via Zoom. Teens can discuss their foreign language learning experiences, discover helpful language learning resources, and learn some signs in American Sign Language. Free. Earth Day isn’t the only day you can learn to be kind to our planet.
