Origin Materials Wins 2022 EPA Green Chemistry Challenge Award in Partnership with University of California, Davis

Global Leader in Carbon Negative Materials Joins Merck, Amgen and Other Winners

WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif., June 7, 2022–(BUSINESS WIRE)–The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has awarded original materialsInc. (“Origin” or “Origin Materials”) (NASDAQ: ORGN, ORGNW), the global leader in carbon negative materials whose mission is to enable the global transition to sustainable materials, in partnership with Professor Mark Mascal of the University of California, Davis (“UC Davis” ), its prestigious Green Chemistry Challenge Award in the Specific Environmental Benefit – Climate Change category. Origin Materials and UC Davis were together one of five winners of the 2022 Green Chemistry Challenge Award who were honored in a ceremony at the American Chemical Society’s Green Chemistry & Engineering annual conference taking place in Reston, Utah. The award recognizes the technology behind Origin’s patented platform for turning carbon in sustainable wood residues into useful materials for a wide range of end products, including apparel, textiles, plastics, packaging, auto parts, tires, carpets, toys, etc. while capturing carbon in the process. On a commercial scale, this new chemistry is expected to produce sustainable, recyclable carbon negative materials at a fraction of the cost of other bio-based technologies, making “net zero” possible and helping customers in a wide range of industries meet their ESG objectives and decarbonization objectives.

Co-founder and co-CEO John Bissell and co-founder and CTO Ryan Smith began collaborating with Professor Mascal while earning chemical engineering degrees at UC Davis over a decade ago.

“Origin’s vision is of a world where carbon negative products and materials are the rule, not the exception, and our technology has been built around converting low-cost, non-food and sustainable raw materials into decarbonized and supply chain ready materials,” Origin said. Co-CEO of Materials, John Bissell. “We are honored to win the EPA Green Chemistry Challenge Award in partnership with Professor Mascal and the University of California, Davis, as we deploy our platform technology to make ‘net zero’ a reality for a number growing number of customers and partners around the world.”

“Tackling environmental challenges such as climate change and the disproportionate impact of pollution in communities concerned with environmental justice will require creative and innovative solutions – and green and sustainable chemistry is a critical part of that,” said EPA’s Office of Chemical Safety and Pollution Prevention. Deputy Assistant Administrator Jennie Romer. “Preventing waste, reducing energy consumption and avoiding hazardous chemicals, which we all recognize today with our awards, demonstrate the power and potential of green chemistry to protect human health and the environment while delivering benefits to businesses and our economy. »

The EPA recognizes green chemistry as the design of chemicals and processes that reduce or eliminate the generation and use of hazardous substances. This year’s winners have developed new and innovative green chemistry technologies that provide solutions to important environmental challenges and drive innovation and economic development.

About original materials

Based in West Sacramento, Origin Materials is the global leader in carbon negative materials. Origin’s mission is to enable the global transition to sustainable materials. For more than a decade, Origin has developed a platform to turn the carbon in cheap, abundant, non-food biomass, like sustainable wood residues, into useful materials while capturing carbon in the process. Origin’s patented technology platform can help revolutionize the production of a wide range of end products, including apparel, textiles, plastics, packaging, auto parts, tires, carpets, toys, etc., with an addressable market of approximately $1 trillion. In addition, Origin’s technology platform is expected to provide stable prices largely decoupled from the oil supply chain, which is exposed to more volatility than supply chains based on sustainable wood residues. Origin’s patented core technology, economy and carbon impact are supported by a growing list of major global customers and investors.

About the EPA Green Chemistry Challenge Awards

Since the awards were established more than a quarter century ago, the EPA and the American Chemical Society, which co-sponsor the awards, have received more than 1,800 nominations and awarded prizes to 133 technologies that reduce chemicals and hazardous resources, reduce costs, protect public health and stimulate economic growth. Winning technologies are responsible for reducing the use or generation of hundreds of millions of pounds of hazardous chemicals annually and saving billions of gallons of water and trillions of British Thermal Units (BTUs) in energy.
